How about it Calvary Baptist? Can we practice Biblical gleaning?
What is Gleaning?
*Gleaning is the custom of following a harvest so that what remains might be used primarily for the poor who have little or no means of supporting themselves. These disenfranchised people are often the widows and the elderly who have lost their husbands or relatives due to death or abandonment and have no other way to survive. Usually the corners of the field were left for the poor to come into someone’s fields and gather the leftovers of the harvest. There was a law of God that commanded this such as in Leviticus 19:9 which says “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest.” The reason for this is further expounded in Leviticus 23:22 “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.” Since there was no welfare system in the time of the Old Testament, this was Israel’s way of providing for the poor of the land and helping them to know the One true God.
*Why this lesson on gleaning?
*We are planning a Revival service to have preaching, singing and a gleaning service on the grounds outside in our Church Parking lot. We are looking for a date in September to reach out to our community by having a food and supplies give-a-way to those who come to our outdoor service to be planned for a date in September.
*How can I help?
1. Please Pray for the outreach to be effective in sharing the Gospel with our community.
2. You can collect vegetables from your gardens, if you have one, to be given out in care packages. (Corn, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, okra, etc.)
3. For those who do not have gardens, please collect toilet items such as toilet paper, cleaning supplies, soap, paper towels, etc. to be given out in care packages.
*If you wanted to give more you could bring new or slightly used “Crock pots,” electric fans or “Lowes” gift cards.
4. You can help distribute fliers about the event (TBA) around the community. Maybe possibly put a sign up in the middle of the street in Robbins and Carthage announcing the Revival and food give-a-way from our Church.
*There is still a harvest going on and the Lord God is gleaning the corners of humanity today! We are to reach out to the lost today with the Gospel of Christ, so that they may know our wonderful God and find Salvation in Christ Jesus! Will you be part of this harvest? I pray so.
